where is my mind?

the beginnings of a project for my applied drawing class. we have to use 3d text and shadow. subconciously this piece expresses everything i have been feeling as of late. my instructor nailed it: bleak, lonesome, vulnerable, embarassed..

bitch.

i don't really know where this is or was going. it was inspired by misprintedtype's collage books.

it's been a while.

i've been m.i.a the last few weeks due to work and class projects. things are going well though. i have really been delving myself into my design work, especially with this applied drawing class that i am in. i've been playing with illustrator a lot and brushing up on some of my hand drawing skills, which is always a good thing.

design that i vectored last night in illustrator. i have a lot to add to give it some originality. it's the Lindsay family crest of Scotland (which is my family). I want to add some thistles or blue bells but I am terrible at vectoring flowers in illustrator so we'll see what happens with it...

i miss the darkroom

i miss the look of film photography so much that i have decided to start recreating my digital prints to give them the "feel" of a darkroom print...



unfortunately, the toxic smell of the darkroom and the dull brown fix stains on all of my clothing don't come along with layering textures and dropping opacities in photoshop. dang it.

Un Chien Andalou

So, maybe I'm a little slow up on the uptake... but today in my Art History II class my instructor was discussing Salvador Dali. Although Dali has always really intrigued me with his art work, I've never really taken the time to delve myself into his life and other works. As we were picking apart "The Persistence of Memory", Dali's most recognizable piece of art, and deciding what it truly meant we got on the topic of how it may portray the complexity of dream, perception of reality, time, birth, death and even sexual desire. I suppose this is something that Dali was very fascinated with, because he focuses on it throughout the majority of his work. That's when my instructor mention a silent film Dali collaborated on entitled "Un Chien Andalou" (An Andalusian Dog). I recognized the title instantly - those are the lines from one of my most favorite Pixies songs: "Debaser".

Maybe you knew... but I certainly did not. And I found it so interesting that the entire song is based of the events that occur within this short film. The film, might I add, is very impressive -- and dark. Dali definitely knows how to use the shock factor. If you haven't seen the film, I posted it below. (I also posted a clip from YouTube that has Debaser playing along with it)

(btw. it was impossible to find the film on youtube without someone laying some terrible music they made over it.. this was the best i could come up with)

ALSO this is the beginning of one of my 3d design class projects... (wooden sculpture using organic & geometric shapes) it's a little house for bunny.. on wheels.. with a hinged door and roof plus a dowel rod that hold a hanging mouse. i'm pretty proud of it to say the least - considering i am terrified of the wood shop and not the best three-dimensional artist.

i have added a lot since the pictures. more paw decoration, there's a tail in the back and it's going to be painted to look just like little bunny cat.

this is one from a number of pictures micah and i took pumpkin carving in october. i just especially like this one.


this is a technique called TtV (through the viewfinder). i was just experimenting with it three or four months ago. i love the look of it.






these two were taken during my first few weeks of class in the fall. i was out finding "e"s for my typography assignment.



aaand these are the recents. i'm in a "digital photography for non-majors" class and to be honest... it kind of sucks. we have to use our point and shoot digital cameras (lucky for me i have a nice one) and i'm the only one in the class with a substantial amount of photography experience. i'm not trying to sound conceited or cocky in anyway, its just difficult when we're going over what f-stop and aperture, shutter speed and depth of field all mean. it's just boring, and not what i was expecting. i suppose what i assumed it would be is more of a digital imaging (editing digital photos and learning new techniques and photoshop/lightroom tricks) i guess refreshment is always a good thing... im just sick of being stuck in the basic photography. i was an AP photo student in high school - i feel like i am selling myself short.

ANYWAY.. for our first assignment we had to create a collection of 10 photos with a theme of "close to home" (things that are important to us or are literally close to home). so i chose to do things that were incredibly important in my life. as i was shooting i discovered the first few things i photographed all had a circular shape, so i tried to continue that relationship throughout my work... check it out:

this is a rough of a poster im working on for eskell and these other boutiques. i still have some editing to do, but felt the need to share. i'm pretty pleased with the outcome thus far..

things have been looking up and only hope things continue on this path. i found out i got a ninety-six on my final typography project. psyched about that. a trip to europe to work for a design firm out there may be in store this summer..and i did some design work for eskell.
